What is Royal jelly?
Royal Jelly is a honey bee secretion that is used in the nutrition of larvae, as well as adult queens. It is secreted from the glands in the hypopharynx of worker bees and fed to all larvae in the colony. In essence, Royal Jelly is the secret to the queen bee’s good health and longevity.
When worker bees decide to make a new queen, either because the old one is weakening, or was killed, they choose several small larvae and feed them with copious amounts of royal jelly in specially constructed queen cells. This type of feeding triggers the development of the queen bee, including the fully developed ovaries needed to lay eggs.
What is in Royal Jelly?
Alive Brand Royal Jelly has many health benefits because of components within it, such as B-complex vitamins like Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and Pyridoxine (vitamin B6). Royal Jelly also includes protein (including many different amino acids), and a high amount of essential fatty acids. It also contains many trace minerals, some enzymes, antibacterial and antibiotic components, and trace amounts of vitamin C. The fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K, are completely absent from royal jelly.
The Story of the Worker Bee and the Queen Bee.
The queen bees and workers relationship have had the health industry excited for years! What is intriguing is that in spite of their identical DNA they are strongly differentiated across a wide range of characteristics including anatomical and physiological differences, the longevity of the queen and reproductive capacity. For example, Queens have large active ovaries, whereas workers have only rudimental inactive ovaries.
Why have we taken it for Decades?
It’s all in the nutrient-rich Royal Jelly that is given to the Queen Bees. A female larva destined to become a queen is fed large quantities of royal jelly that triggers a cascade of molecular events resulting in queen development. This is why Royal jelly has been recommended for decades for people to gain a stronger immune system, to ease stress, to combat fatigue and help increase stamina. The queen bee is known to live healthy years, versus the worker bees who only make it a few weeks. Therefore, one of the most valuable benefits of taking Royal Jelly is because of longevity. It’s the quality of the years you live, not the quantity.
